Mujeres nativas: es lo de hoy

Ser de origen nativo no había sido de gran importancia hasta hoy en día.

Las mujeres pertenecientes a estas etnias están haciendo historia alrededor del mundo, ya sea en la política, en la moda o en la industria del cine.

El ejemplo más claro es la oaxaqueña Yalitza Aparicio, la cual apareció en las revistas más importantes de moda a nivel mundial, como Vogue en su versión americana y semanas antes también engalanó las páginas de Vanity Fair.

Yalitza Aparicio gracing the cover of Vanity Fair. Aparicio is known for her role as ‘Cleo’ in the film ‘Roma’, which is directed by Alfonso Cuarón. This is Aparicio’s first role, as she had no prior acting experience. She is from the town of Tlaxiaco in Oaxaca and has a degree in education and is a pre school teacher. ‘Roma’ premiered at the 75th Venice International Film Festival on August 30th, 2018. Pero no solo ella ha logrado destacar, hay una serie de mujeres de origen nativo que están haciendo historia y están logrando destacarse del resto.

La política no se puede quedar atrás, en las pasadas elecciones de medio término en Estados Unidos dos congresistas de ascendencia nativa ganaron un puesto en el congreso.

Deb Haaland proveniente de la tribu Laguna Pueblo, se convirtió en congresista del partido demócrata.

That could change this year. Deb Haaland, who was photographed here by @adriamalcolm, is among a historic number of Native American women running for office. In all, there are at least 4 indigenous women running for the nation’s highest legislative body, while 3 more are bidding for governors’ offices and another 31 are campaigning for seats in state legislatures. @deb4congressnm is a citizen of the #LagunaPueblo, a sovereign nation west of Albuquerque. When she was a child, she’d wake up early, sling a water jar around her waist and climb the mesa overlooking her pueblo. It was as high as she ever thought she would go. On the campaign trail, she frequently cites her heritage, and she makes the argument that many of the issues affecting native communities afflict other groups as well. “I know what it’s like to get my health care from the Indian Health Service, and hold a sick child in the waiting room for 3 hours until you have a chance to see a doctor,” she said. Sharice Davids es otra nativa de la tribu Ho-Chunk que también se ganó un puesto en el Congreso americano, por parte del partido demócrata.

Hasta en la industria de la moda ser de origen nativo está en lo más “in”, tal es el caso de la modelo Charlee Fraser quien viene de una familia aborigen de Australia. Su exótica belleza la ha llevado a participar en las pasarelas de Alexander Wang, Oscar de la Renta, Christopher Kane, Dolce & Gabbana, Hermes y muchas otras marcas.
